Professor E. Ambikairajah appointed as Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) - Australia Day Honours 2026

I am immensely proud to congratulate our exceptional colleague, Professor E. Ambikairajah AO, who has been honoured on Australia Day for his outstanding service over his life's work.

He has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his "distinguished service to tertiary education, research, electrical engineering, technology innovation and the Sri Lankan community in Australia."

Professor E. Ambikairajah (Ambi) AO is the former long-serving Head of the School of EE&T and former Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Innovation and Enterprise).

This honour is a testament to his unwavering commitment to students, colleagues, the engineering profession and the wider community. The AO is the second-highest honour in the nation among the four categories of the Order of Australia awards.

We thank him for his dedication and for the positive and meaningful impact he continues to make.

Congratulations, Ambi!

Professor Jinhong Yuan, Head of School, EE&T

Great news for UNSW quantum research as UNSW Team Secures New AEA Ignite Funding for Quantum Time Transfer Project!

We're excited to share that a UNSW team has secured $427,188 in new AEA Ignite funding from the Department of Education for a cutting-edge project in ultra-secured quantum-based time transfer.

Building on momentum from earlier Trailblazer funding, this project strengthens pathways toward the commercialisation of next-generation quantum technologies, supported by strong collaboration and co-funding from Northrop Grumman and UNSW through the NSW Space Research Network.

Ultra-secured quantum time transfer is a critical capability for future space, defence and communications infrastructure, where precision timing and absolute security are essential.

This funding will accelerate research, development and translation in this strategically important area.

Congratulations to everyone involved from EE&T in making this achievement possible.
