These are James Bott's recollections from the Alumni table with Peter Vickery. Qn: When did we graduate and what do we do now? JB: On this topic both Peter and myself spoke about our work with energy management systems and the type of software used for control and analysis of the power system (and energy market) in real-time. In particular the roles of the system/market operator and TNSP within the power system operations context, which is overlapping in some areas (i.e system security), and different in others (i.e. TNSP ownership and responsibility over transmission assets). We also spoke about the different types of roles we had earlier on in our careers that were closer to the hardware side. Qn: Types of roles in energy and how to get into energy? JB: Some brief discussion on the types of roles in system operation, planning, transmission, as well as the OEM/vendor/consulting /asset owner side. I shared some experience on startups and what type of companies are out there. My comments on this were that getting experience early on (either through internships, student projects or similar) can be useful not just for finding employment later but also in learning more about the different type of roles and what work might be of interest, as well as perhaps taking a thesis in the area. Other things worth considering when deciding on a direction could also include job stability, impact on lifestyle or salary. . . . Continued in Second Comment | |

I was impressed that so many students were really curious for ideas about building their early careers around electrical engineering. Just a few years back, too many seemed to be "spreading their bets" with double degrees. The electrification boom is driving huge demand for young workers.
